THETA EPSILON OMICROS IOTA FRATERNITY
PLEDGE MANUAL

'THIS MANUAL IS TO BE SHOWN ONLY TO THOSE
WHO HAVE A DEFINITE CONNECTION WITH THETA
EPSILON FRATERNITY

This manual' has "been prepared with the Idea of present-
ing to the pledge an -understanding of: -Ideals, symbols, met-
hods of operation* pledge instructions, arid songs of THETA
EPSILON,

It cannot be conceived that any person pledging can con-
sider that he Is doing the fraternity a favor by becoming a
member* It can be seen* obviously, that one person cannot be
greater than the organization to which he belongs• If THETA
EPSILON had initiated men who would not* or could not, become
an asset to the fraternity * the ideals and the traditions of
the oldest fraternity at Upsala College, THETA EPSILON, could
not possibly withstood the test of time.

It is assumed that when you accepted the bid of THETA
EPSILON9 you will shortly acquire membership into this frater-
nity o The importance of the next sentence should be fully re-
cognized* IF YOUR ATTITUDE IS THAT THE FRATERNITY IS NOT AN
ASSET, BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF AND THE FRATERNITY AND SURREN-
DER YOUR MANUAL,

Perhaps one of the ^est and important points for the
pledge to consider is that of giving and taking between the
fraternity and himself* The new member cannot expect to sit

back and contribute only hie assent or dissent to what the
fraternity proposes to do* He must willingly take an active ■
part in the undertakings of the fraternityc At the same time
the fraternity does not expect the member to give most of his
time* or even wore than his share of time, thought* and work
to the organization* What is necessary is that the member ex-
pend a proportionate amount of his efforts depending upon his
total available time* This amount of course, depends on seve~
ral things.? the office held, the type of scholastic schedule
being carried, his other campus activities, and outside inte-
rests 0

Remember* further, that the fraternity can,, and will be,

of- considerable benefit to the new member* You will make life
long acquaintances and. many, important contacts through this

association* These contacts may be of exceptional Importance
in your later life* The ideals of brotherhood will >e instill-
ed in you as well as the other fine qualities which the frat-
ernity can afford you* Activities about the campus include
many GODS in their rolesj the brothers can help new Pledgees
establish themselves in the activities suited to their inte-
rests e

The pledges must keep in mind that the reason he is in
college is to obtain an education* This objective must come
before anything else in the mind of the student* All of the
brothers are more than willing to help you in any subject which$
at the time* might be giving you trouble«

THETA EFSILOK maintains that perseverance,, integrity, and
initiative are the outstanding characteristics upon which to
base a successful, membership, and these, along with cooperation,
mold membership into a whole*

Now that you have shown that you desire membership in 0E
a brief period of pledging follows* During this time known
affectionately as Hell Week you will be called EEOPHYTB,
meaning beginner•

You will be asked to read the contents of this manual.
and also to learn a greater part of it* YOU WILL BE TOLD KANT
THINGS DURING THIS PERIOD OF PLEDGING WHICH KAY SEEK STRANGE
TO YOU, BUT THE FRATERNITT HAS A SPECIAL REASON IN DOING SO,
AND EXPECTS THAT YOU PERFORM THEM WITHOUT QUESTION. WHETHER
OR NOT YOU WILL BECOME A HEKBER WILL BE JUDGED CONSIDERABLY
ON THESE TESTS* Some of the tests may appear exceptionally-
difficult.- but the fraternity expects that you accomplish
them as the pledges of THETA EFSILOK have done in the past..
