You have somewhat sanitized versions.  At the time the song was a sung
 a little more brutally, with the first line:

If you want the bloody general - etc

If you want the bloody colonel - etc

If you want the bloody major - etc

If you want the bloody quarter-bloke - etc

If you want the bloody sergeant - etc

Ending up with:

If you want the old battalion, we know where they are - etc.

 
Also worth noting:
