This song is thought to have deep folk roots but collected versions offer conflicting hints as to its origin. Guy overhears girl talking to a man in a room across the hall. “Put it there! Oh there? No, there!” punchline: “I rushed through the door and socked that fella/ then I broke that darned umbrella.”
