This song is thought to have deep folk roots but collected versions offer conflicting hints as to its origin. This disc is far more explicit than most and may provide the first recording of the word “knobscotch.”

-Following anonymous performance has not been traced to its original issue but is audibly as above with sax player switching to clarinet. Mxs. LO 392 & 3 are untraced. Guy overhears girl talking to a man in a room across the hall. “Put it there! Oh there? No, there!” punchline: “I rushed through the door and socked that fella/ then I broke that darned umbrella.”
